The Accountant Calculates a First Place Win

Warner Bros. Pictures‘ The Accountant opened in first place at the domestic box office with an estimated $24.7 million from 3,332 theaters, an average of $7,417 per location. Internationally, the film grossed $2.8 million on 1,190 screens in 10 markets. Directed by Gavin O’Connor, the thriller stars Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jean Smart, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Lithgow. Made for about $44 million, the film received an A CinemaScore from audiences.

Columbia Pictures opened the Ron Howard-directed Inferno internationally in 52 markets two weeks before the film’s domestic release. Starring Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones, the Dan Brown adaptation earned an estimated $50 million. It was made for $75 million. The first film in the series, The Da Vinci Code, grossed $758.2 million worldwide in 2006, while Angels & Demons earned $485.9 million in 2009.

The Universal Pictures stand-up comedy movie Kevin Hart: What Now? debuted in the second spot domestically with $11.98 million from 2,567 theaters, an average of $4,669. Kevin Hart: What Now? broke the record for the biggest opening ever for a stand-up comedy film, passing The Original Kings of Comedy ($11 million) and Hart’s own 2013 stand-up film, Let Me Explain ($10 million). What Now? was made for just $9.9 million and received an A- CinemaScore.

After opening in first place last weekend, The Girl on the Train (Universal, DreamWorks) dropped to third place, adding $11.97 million for a two-week total of $46.6 million. Made for $45 million, the Tate Taylor-directed adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ best-selling novel stars Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow and Laura Prepon.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children earned $8.9 million in the fourth spot and has grossed $65.8 million domestically in three weeks. Internationally, Miss Peregrine added $23.5 million and has now earned $130.9 million, for a worldwide total of $196.7 million. An adaptation of the Ransom Rigg book, the 20th Century Fox release was directed by Tim Burton. Made for about $110 million, Miss Peregrine stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Chris O’Dowd, Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson.

Coming in at No. 5 was Lionsgate’s Deepwater Horizon, which earned $6.4 million its third weekend for a total of $49.3 million so far. Directed by Peter Berg, the $110 million film stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Dylan O’Brien, Gina Rodriguez and Kate Hudson.

In sixth place, Warner Bros.’ animated adventure Storks earned $5.6 million and has collected $59.1 million after four weeks. Internationally, the $70 million film added $10.6 million for an overseas total of $71.6 million and worldwide total of $130.7 million. Storks is voiced by Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Katie Crown, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Danny Trejo, Ty Burrell and Jennifer Aniston.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven added $5.2 million to bring its total to $84.8 million after four weeks. Made for $90 million, Antoine Fuqua’s modern remake of the western classic stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer and Peter Sarsgaard.

Also, Open Road Films released Max Steel in 2,034 theaters where the Mattel adaptation earned just $2.16 million, a low average of $1,064 per theater and good for just 11th place. Directed by Stewart Hendler, the film stars Ben Winchell, Maria Bello, Ana Villafañe, Josh Brener and Andy Garcia. Max Steel received a B CinemaScore from audiences.
