Robert Vaughn, an actor with a long and varied career best known for ’60s spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., has died.
Vaughn played suave spy Napoleon Solo, a sort of American James Bond, on NBC’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. from 1964 to 1968.
The series ran for four seasons and spawned a spin-off, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., and a 1983 TV movie Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. He won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 1978 for the miniseries Washington: Behind Closed Doors.
His movie career began in 1956 as an extra in The Ten Commandments; by 1959 he was an Oscar nominee for his role in The Young Philadelphians.
