The multi-movie story arcs tend to climax around the Avengers films – the next one isn’t until 2019’s two-part summer film Avengers: Infinity War.
With the box office success of Captain America: Civil War, Marvel Studios comic book adaptations have grossed a collective $10bn globally since the new wave of superhero powered movies began in 2008.
Marvel has released 13 movies over eight years in its Marvel Cinematic Universe series, starting with the first Iron Man movie.
Other films in the Disney stable are overperforming, as well – the company’s well-reviewed detective-themed cartoon Zootopia closed the weekend with just under $1bn.
