They’re the fastest fighters in the Rebel Alliance and a new version will be introduced later this year in Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.

Of course, there were no A-Wings or U-Wings in Episode IV – A New Hope but Rogue One retconned U-Wings into the merchandise lines and continuity in that era despite none of the appearing on the original film.
As for A-Wings, they were first introduced alongside B-Wing bombers in Return of the Jedi but were retconned far earlier into the timeline thanks to the animation department featuring them as primary vehicles in Star Wars Rebels.
