The British Independent Film Awards have named Andrea Arnold’s dizzying US road movie American Honey as the best British independent film of 2016, in an awards ceremony which celebrated some of the very best the industry has to offer.
International fare also received a shoutout, with Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight (an Oscar favourite) beating out the likes of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Manchester by the Sea, Mustang, and Toni Erdmann.
American Honey also saw awards for Arnold herself, star Sasha Lane, and cinematographer Robbie Ryan; with Ken Loach’s stirring benefits drama I, Daniel Blake seeing wins amongst the acting categories.
The night also proved strong for debut films: Babak Anvari’s horror Under the Shadow picked up multiple awards, alongside Rachel Tunnard’s Adult Life Skills and Jim Hosking’s The Greasy Strangler.
