Last month, the first box office projections put the Blade Runner 2049 opening weekend at north of $40 million, which, ironically, is more than the $32.8 million domestic lifetime total for the original Blade Runner movie, which includes theatrical re-releases.
The R-rated Blade Runner 2049 is projected to debut in a whopping 3,900 theaters, but it’s possible it could be pushed into the 4,000 theater range.
Acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Prisoners) directs from a script by original Blade Runner writer Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, with Ridley Scott producing.
