Donald Trump has incited the wrath of Hollywood after effectively banning transgender people from serving in the US military, blaming the “medical costs and disruption” they would cause.
“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming…victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.
The swift social media reaction following his announcement – which, CNN reports, was unknown to the White House press office – has been overwhelmingly negative with many celebrities – including George Takei, transgender actress Candis Cayne and Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, expressing their disgust.
Many Twitter users, including Hollywood icon Mia Farrow, highlighted a tweet sent by Trump in June 2016 when he thanked the LGBT community, writing: “I will fight for you while Hillary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs.”
