In 2014 the management of Thamesmead was taken over by Peabody, one of London’s oldest housing associations.
She was originally attracted to the neighbourhood by its affordable housing, green spaces and multicultural community and is excited about the new plans for the town.
Built by the Greater London council in the late 1960s, Thamesmead was promoted as London’s new town – a utopia of affordable housing, green spaces and artificial lakes, which would provide a solution to the city’s postwar housing shortage.
One in six jobs are in the creative industries and cultural tourists spend something like £7bn each year.
