The previous largest September Tuesday was Sully‘s $4.8 million, while the previous largest Tuesday for a horror film was The Conjuring‘s $5.6 million.
Among the other benchmarks are: the highest opening weekend for a horror film and top September debut ever in Russia and Australia; the biggest horror film debut in Brazil, Holland and Poland; and Warner Bros. Pictures’ largest opening for 2017 in 19 markets, including Russia, Australia, Spain, Poland, Norway, Belgium, Finland, Denmark and Chile.
After earning $8.8 million on Monday, New Line Cinema‘s IT has broken the September Tuesday record with $11.4 million, to bring its domestic total to $143.6 million after just five days.
Internationally, IT earned $66.3 million from 10,665 screens in 46 international markets, which is the biggest opening ever for a horror film.
