The news was announced over the weekend by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, following North America’s lowest box office weekend in 22 years.
Movies that did appear in theaters this past weekend include Pixar’s Onward, Universal’s The Hunt, and Sony’s Bloodshot.
For the regions of the country where theaters will remain open, AMC Theaters is still implementing regulations to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Said de Blasio on Twitter last Sunday: “We will come through this, but until we do, we must make whatever sacrifices necessary.”
