A previous 3D conversion of a James Cameron film, his 2012 3D re-release of Titanic, grossed $343 million worldwide, the bulk of that made overseas.
The core cast of T2 (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong and Robert Patrick) were reunited in 1996 for the 12-minute-long Universal Studios attraction T2 3D: Battle Across Time, which Cameron co-directed with effects men John Bruno and Stan Winston.
Upon its release, T2 was the most expensive movie ever made at $102 million, won four technical Oscars, and was followed by three sequels (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys).
Cameron is slated to revive the franchise in some capacity in 2019 with Deadpool director Tim Miller and David Ellison of Skydance.
