Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049 are among the 10 films released in 2017 that have made the shortlist for a Best VFX Oscar nomination.
But with the potential Best Visual Effects nominees trimmed to 10, The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049 have emerged as standouts and possibly the front-runners.
If mo-cap is the new standard for VFX achievements – it was the driving force behind last year’s winner, The Jungle Book – then The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049 should at least expect nominations.
It comes as no surprise that Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi was yet another visual treat for Star Wars fans, while Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 was arguably the best-looking movie to be released in 2017, with some impressive effects in its own right.
