This is ultimately a big shift for the Spider-Man franchise as a whole because Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films (as well as Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man films) often eschewed the ideas of youth to get Peter out of high school as quickly as possible.
That idea of Peter Parker fighting his own battle and seeking his own independence will play a significant role in the overarching themes of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Now it seems that we’re going to see far more of Peter dealing with the trials and tribulations of puberty, so facing off in a life or death battle with a substantially older villain like Vulture makes plenty of sense.
Jon Watts has made it abundantly clear that he has taken ample inspiration from the work of John Hughes in the creation of this movie, and the mentality and lifestyle of a teenager will factor heavily into the characterization of Spider-Man throughout the upcoming film.
