As Deadline points out, the estimated take has the film making exactly as much as both Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor did in their respective debuts – and those movies really are perfect comparisons (Wonder Woman is kind of a mix of both Marvel blockbusters, mixing high-fantasy elements with a 20th century wartime setting).
Since then, both of those 2011 movies have launched successful sequels that outpaced their predecessors on opening weekend and in total worldwide gross.
It’s worth mentioning that while a proposed $65 million score for Wonder Woman doesn’t exactly shine next to the $145 million just made by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it’s a number hardly without precedent for a debut superhero solo movie.
