British actor Ian Gelder, who played Tywin Lannister’s brother Kevan on HBO’s Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 74 of complications from bile duct cancer, according to our sister site Variety.
Gelder appeared as Kevan Lannister in 12 episodes spanning Thrones’ first six seasons, often acting as a levelheaded counterweight to the Lannisters’ more power-hungry instincts.
“He was a wonderful wonderful actor, and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and light.”
But he might be best known to TV fans as Kevan Lannister — the younger brother of Tywin and uncle to Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion — on the HBO fantasy epic Game of Thrones, making his debut in Season 1’s eighth episode.
