Hacksaw Ridge is Gibson’s first film as director since Apocalypto in 2006.
Previous to that, he directed Braveheart and 2004’s bankable yet controversial religious film The Passion of the Christ; a sequel is reportedly in the works.
Andrew Garfield will head up Gibson’s new film alongside Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington and Teresa Palmer.
Mel Gibson has returned to the director’s chair for Hacksaw Ridge, the story of WWII Army Medic Desmond T. Doss who became the first conscientious objector in US history to be awarded the Medal of Honour.
