The studio is actively working to change this perception, first with the upcoming Black Panther movie and the female-fronted Captain Marvel after that, both looking to change the public perception of where a Marvel superhero can come from.
Originally appearing as a supporting character in the (male-led) Captian Marvel comics of the 1960s, Carol Danvers was upgraded to her own superhero role as Ms. Marvel in the ’70s.
