The film, focusing on a Russian spy trained from childhood as an assassin, has been given a firm R-rating in the US (that’s a 15 certificate in the UK) for strong violence, torture, sexual content, language and some graphic nudity further proving that Lawrence’s Hunger Games days are behind her.
The BBFC rating for the forthcoming film Red Sparrow proves the Jennifer Lawrence spy adventure won’t be for younger audiences.
Elsewhere, Annihilation – the next film from Ex Machina writer-director Alex Garland – has been handed an R-rating for violence, bloody images, language and some sexuality.
Boasting an all-female lead ensemble, the film will be released in the UK on Netflix this March.
