The network has been producing two cycles of The Voice per year; landing American Idol could have changed up the lineup and given the Voice crew a break.

The overture from ABC actually comes as something of a surprise, as it wasn’t so long ago that the networks squabbling for the rights to American Idol were Fox and NBC.
NBC on the other hand was reportedly looking for a show that could could give The Voice a break as the network’s performance-based competition show.
