The Mummy will attempt to get Universal Pictures’ rebooted monster movie universe fully up and running when it opens in theaters in 2017.
Thus, Crowe as Dr. Jekyll will debut in The Mummy, before going on to either headline his own film and/or appear in another Universal monster movie altogether.
Starring Tom Cruise as a modern-day ex-Navy SEAL who crosses paths with a resurrected Egyptian queen played by Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), the Mummy reboot is being directed by Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness co-writer/producer Alex Kurtzman.
Boutella, who is all but unrecognizable playing the alien warrior Jaylah in this month’s Star Trek Beyond, is a rising star, so Universal was smart to lock her in for its monster universe before she becomes a bigger name.
