When released in 2014, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes was a massive victory, pulling in $72.6 million in its first three days, but War’s performance was closer to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, which opened with $54.8 million.
War For The Planet Of The Apes proved itself a strong contender at the box office following up on weeks of good buzz from positive professional reviews – though it will ultimately be seen as a moderate victory, particularly in the context of the modern Planet of the Apes trilogy.
This is arguably another example of sequel fatigue in summer 2017 blockbusters, but it’s also hard to ignore the fact that the movie is coming out after a surprising number of weekends in a row with huge releases.
